Saidi workshops in Sydney, November 1 & 8, 2009

INSPIRE! BELLYDANCE presents:
Saidi and Rakset al Assaya workshops with Rachel
www.inspirebellydance.com.au

More than just dancing with a stick, Saidi is a masculine, earthy style from Upper Egypt.
Experience its joy and power!

Saidi fundamentals - Sunday 1 November, 1-3 pm
Learn to recognise Saidi music and dance it with a different flavour from classical bellydance. Discover how to hold, spin and work with the assaya (cane) and learn simple but effective moves and combinations. Suitable for Beyond Beginner dancers with little or no experience in Saidi, or for more experienced dancers wanting a solid technical foundation as preparation for the choreography workshop.

Saidi combinations and choreography - Sunday 8 November, 1-3 pm
For those already familiar with basic Saidi style and stick use, we delve deeper into technique. Add richness and groundedness to your dancing, and explore new ways to manipulate the assaya. Learn more challenging moves and combinations in a choreography to Da’at Qalbi by Assi el Hellani.

Bring a stick (cane/assaya). Music CDs and sticks will be available for purchase at the workshop, or in advance by contacting me.

Venue: Rozelle School of Visual Arts, 57 Nelson St, Rozelle (see www.inspirebellydance.com.au/maps.html for Rozelle studio location map and parking info)
Cost: Pre-paid: $35 each or $65 for both. At the door: $40 each (space permitting).

Tribal Soiree in Newcastle!

Hi everyone

there was some discussion on another tribal dance group about whether or not Newcastle would be hosting the next student soiree. So the 8th and 15 November are back on the board.

It would be really helpful if

1. I could have some feedback about who can and who can't make it on either of these days.
2. What date is your preference.
3. What vendors would like to attend.

Your quick replies would be appreciated. I know some of you are busy in Queensland for Feast of the Senses - hope you are having fun!!

Cheers, Susan

hey sisters of dance! i'm from the states and i'm most likely gonna be going to stay with a good friend in perth for a year in about 6- 8 months. i've been dancing for 5 years now, been teaching for 3 at cincinnati's Habeeba's dance of the arts (the oldest bellydance studio in Ohio, USA) and i'm really hoping to find out some info about local studios in perth for advanced dancers....i would perfer not to take a beginner class but i really don't wanna stop dancing. Anyone have any suggestions?

I'm thinking of participating to the Mid North Coast Bellydance Festival 2009, hold in Kempsey by Shanna.
http://www.festival.ishtarbellydance.com/modules/wfchannel/
Anyone been there already? Do you have experience to share? I mean, it's a huge trip (and a lot of money), so I'd love to have some opinions.

Should I be there. I hope to meet some of you and I would be happy to perform or teach. I'm not everyday in Australia :)

Bye!

Teachers in Egypt - who would you recommend?

I am going to Egypt with my Husband and I intend to get one or two bellydance lessons in while I am over there. (whats the point of a bellydancer going all the way over there and not getting a lesson eh?)

I know about the Nile Festival happening in November but am not sure if I will be in that area when it is on.

Does any one have any favorite teachers over there that they have been to and can recommend to me?

I saw on Lonely Planet that they recommend Raqia Hassan.

I'd say my experience is Intermediate/advanced.
www.raks-sharki.com/Blue_velvet.html

Australia has lots of lovely bellydancers, but who's who, and who's where? Tell us a bit about yourself, your style, who you admire, and all that good stuff.

I'm Mahastee, I live in Port Hedland, in the Pilbara region of WA. Trained by Min Adlide, who was trained by Terezka. Our troupe, MihriMah Raqs Sharqi is pretty isolated up here, but we travel to Perth for the annual wamed fest, and every year one or two of us wind up going to Perth and the East coast - usually Melbourne - for holidays, and checking out what's going on belly-wise on in 'the real world'. We mainly do oriental, but like to spice things up with modern music. We're also learning a bit of ATS, but are nowhere near ready to perform it yet..

My most-adored Aussie dancers are; Alma, Rose, Kismet Tribe, Helen the Henna Goddess, Jilyan, and oh, lots of others, I could go on and on.

So, how about everyone else?

Greetings! I just wanted to express my joy at a wonderful night on Friday 26th! I went to a presentation by 'Free Spirit Gypsy Tribal'- it was the first time I'd ever seen them perform, and man did I have a good time!!

I just wanted to thank the girls- Free Spirit, The Bollywood Sapphires, and The Spirit Sisters- I had an AWESOME time! I loved it!! And I've seen Alma dance Tamrahenna a few times, but as usual- she was awesome!

It was well worth going out in the cold crappy night for! I video'd some of it (not very well - I'm still getting used to the camera!) for my poor husband, who had to go lay down in the car halfway through- as he was in dental agony- and was very upset that he missed the second half!

I had a ball- and I intend on seeing about some classes for myself!! You guys were just wonderful! Thankyou for a wonderful night!!

Hello all,

Speaking as the moderator of this tribe...

If you have something to sell, then you may post a message to this tribe, and we can then choose to read it (or not). when we check into Tribe.

But the Tribe Alerts automatically get emailed to all of the members and it is very annoying. Please do not mis-use " Tribe Alerts".

Persistant offenders will be removed from this group.

Thanks, Annabella

Hi everyone

hope you are all well. I'm pleased to announce we are now selling copies of our Feast of the Senses DVD - our showcase event highlighting some beautiful tribal performances from groups in Brisbane, and surrounding areas including performances from Urban Qabila, Nina from Gypsy Rain, DrumDance, Downunder Tribal, Kazuri Tribe, Kismet, Saahirah Ravyn & of course the Blossoms.

DVDs are $40 with funds going to the Qld Cancer Council from each sale :)

Also - for anyone looking for Tribal in Brisbane, the Blossoms are expanding - September 26 we'll be offering classes in our new location at the Brisbane Powerhouse....so we'll have Tribal Basics classes running in two locations (thus answering the age old issue of people in Brissy not wanting to cross the river - we are now northside AND southside)

All info on the newly painted, fresh website www.tribalblossoms.com

Lastly - I cant wait to see Devi next week, will be great to finally catch up after what feels ages :)

have a great day everyone!

X-post: Big Beautiful Belly Dancer 2008 Calendar call for photos

Greetings all belly dancing beauties!

Last winter, an idea was brought up to create a calendar featuring our big, beautiful, belly-dancer (BBBD) sisters and there was such a huge, positive response that this idea has become a reality!

The creative mindset behind this idea, BBBD Meghan, asked BBBD Kamala Devi to chair this project, and with the help of some very motivated BBBD sisters, we are pleased to announce that we are now accepting applications from other BBBD sisters for the BBBD 2008 Calendar!

Click on the following link for additional information:

http://totallynortherntribal.com/BBBD.Calendar.htm

Please read all the information carefully and follow the instructions. If you have any questions, please send a Tribe PM to Calendar chairperson Kamala Devi.

The deadline for your application is July 31, 2007.

We are all looking forward to this project and are eager to see how the calendar turns out. We hope that this is successful enough to become an annual calendar.

Thanks everyone!

Kamala Devi and the BBBD 2008 Calendar Committee

DISCLAIMER: there is no connection between Totally Northern Tribal (TNT) and the BBBD 2008 Calendar. Calendar chairperson Kamala Devi, a member of TNT, linked off her TNT Member’s Page.

New Beginners ATS Classes in W.A.

Hi all,

Posting this on behalf on my good friend Amy...

Amy is starting a new beginners American Tribal Style class at Sheik to Sheik in Beaconsfield, W.A.

This brand NEW class begins on Tuesday, 28 August 2007. Classes are from 9.30 – 11.00am. Please call Sheik to Sheik on 9314 5055 for bookings and info.

Some words from Amy...

"I've been bellydancing for ten years now, five of which have been pure ATS with The Kismet Tribe. Currently I dance tribal fusion with the
Spirit Sisters and love making kookie choreographies with them. I also love the feeling of dancing ATS improv – to me this is the essence of
tribal. That magical feeling of connecting with other women in dance and moving as one is only possible with improv…so join me for classes to make that magic (or at least to have fun trying)!"

ATS workshop in Newcastle (NSW) July 2007

Hello! I have been lurking on this site for a little while and have decided to jump in.

I started teaching ATS in Newcastle in 2005 when Silk Caravan's ATS teacher left the group. FCBD format suited me because as a beginner at the time, it was very easy to follow Carolena's DVD instructions and pass them on to the students.

Two years has passed since then and I have learned so much more of ATS with excellent teachers. I have had a short break from regular weekly teaching ATS, and am now going to present an ATS Tribal Basics workshop in Newcastle on 15 and 22 July. If you want details of the workshop, please email me at sgleeson@idl.net.au

Cheers, Susan Gleeson

Hi,

I brought back 2 pairs of Melodia pants from the US and the person changed their mind and didn't want them. I kept one pair for myself, which I constantly wear and love, but I still have the other pair unopened out of the package.

It is a Medium size Pocket deconstructed style, earth / olive colour. 34" inseam fits 5'6" - 5'9" (or shorter, I usually like my pants long) and accomodates US sizes 6-8-10.

You can see the pictures here:
http://shena.smugmug.com/gallery/2743480#145747393

I absolutely LOVE these pants and wear them all the time, I think the person didn't want them because it's not the usual black bellydance pants, but I wear them everywhere and they look great with all outfits, not just bellydancing.

I am letting them go for less than what I paid for them, for AU$90, ono. I hope they find a lovely home!

contact me here on tribe if you're interested.

NEW SOLACE MIX CD!

Coming this April, EMP is releasing the Moon Moth Mixes: A Belly Dance Practice Companion, produced by Solace and Blue Damsel’s Rachel Lazarus Soto. The Moon Moth Mixes is a collection of five 13+ minute tracks designed for belly dance class/workshop use and drilling. Each track maintains a steady tempo for the entire length of the song, while the feel of the tracks weave in and out of many moods creating an amazing array of diversity. There are two slow tracks: one frame drum piece and one electronica piece, and three uptempo tracks in varying tempos from slower, to medium, to fast, so that you can progress your class or your own drilling with the advancement of your proficiency. Featured in the mixes are samples from Ruben van Rompaey's re-released Eastern Expressions 2: Gomera, Maduro's Shimmer Sustain, Solace's Nagari, as well as a full length remix of 'Jiva', from Solace's Nagari, and a full length remix of 'Sleeping Sober' from the upcoming (early 2008) Solace Release Opium Head. These mixes were assembled by Jeremiah Soto, the writer/producer of Solace, and may be considered some of his finest work yet. This disc will be available for pre-order, so visit our store!

http://secure.infinities.com/commerce/empcds/onlinestore/main.cfm

The Moon Moth MIxes will be available on our Aussie Serpent's Kiss Tour!

Howdy y'all

Howdy, y'all

Belaharr is a drum and dance troupe in Austin. We have a new CD out of the music we perform and dance to, much of it is great for tribal and/or fusion. You might hear something you want to perform to. And I just couldnt resist posting to Australia!

You can hear a few of the songs at cdbaby.com/cd/belaharr or www.rythmpig.com (my personal website), and order the CD either place. If you like any of the sample songs and end up dancing to them, let me hear from you because I love to hear which ones people like the most.

Hi there all.
I am new to tribe, and to this tribe!
Anyhow... A little about myself I guess...
I've been dancing for roughly 6 months now, and in the past few weeks I've had my first four public performances!
The last performance I did, I actually had to lead the other girls as our techer was absent :-s
I first started dancing as to relive pain, and as physio... But I fell so much inlove with bellydance, that it now is my life!
Dancing, creating costumes and accessories and performing hehe.
Anyway.. That's me, and my dancing life :-)

Hello dear Aussie dance sisters! I am hoping someone can help me! I had one of your local sisters (SE region, according to the city code) make a big purchase with me with her credit card at TQNW, and I had a problem processing it. I tried to call the number she gave us, but it is listed as disconnected. I really need to get in touch with her to settle this transaction, and knew of no other recourse than putting out a call for help from you all. Can anyone get me in touch with her?
Thanks everyone!

Pre-Order the New Solace CD, NAGARI

Hello Everyone!

The new Solace CD is available for pre-order now! Order "Nagari" and receive a 10% discount until September 12, 2006. You can visit the online store and reserve your copy:

http://secure.infinities.com/commerce/empcds/onlinestore/main.cfm

Here's a little descript:
"Jeremiah M. Soto has spent the last 6 years constructing and composing what is now called Nagari. It is a mirror into the heart and mind of his pain, struggles, and revelations. Jeremiah’s goal was to produce a CD that was more “human” and not so polished and perfect. Nagari’s raw and organic sound is attributed to Tim Rayborn’s virtuoso string playing, Ruben van Rompaey’s heart felt and driving percussion, and Kate St. Pierre’s powerful, soulful vocals, only to be topped off by Jeremiah’s orchestral layering arrangements. Nagari is by far Solace’s most intriguing and anticipated releases on EMP, harking back to the days of Shawaza and The Gathering Season."

A tentative release date is August 19 at Tribal Cafe. We are hoping to have it then, but rest assured, if it is not, we will continue to take pre-orders and your CD will be shipped as it becomes available.

The artwork was painted and put together by Daniel M. Diaz of Blind Divine. Check out his beautiful artwork and music:

Listen to the new track, "End of Religion" on Myspace:

Thank you to all who have contirbuted to Nagari, it was worth the wait!!

Overseas training?

I know a few senior Aussie instructors organise overseas bellydance trips. Mostly to the Middle East, and at least one (Terezka's) to Bali. Other dancers travel alone or with their troupe members to further their knowledge. I'm not sure if there are currently any "package" bellydance trips to the US.

Is there anyone out there who can share their experiences of overseas bellydance trips? How did it enrich your experience as an Australian dancer, would you reccomend overseas training to everyone? Were there any major hurdles or surprises you encountered? Can we get the same standard of tuition here at home? What about travel to India/Europe/Africa/South America? How do other forms of 'folk' dance enrich your bellydance experience?

Please share your thoughts.

By the way..... WHEEEE! MihriMah are the main pic! I feel all famous n'that! *blush*.

I am the Australian Tour booking agent for "the Brothers of the Baladi", an exciting middle eastern
world music band based in Portland, on the west coast of the US. For thirty
years the Brothers have been producing truly excellent recordings both
traditional and contemporary, of middle eastern classics as well as
flavouring their originals and rock covers with middle eastern and world
music sounds. Touring extensively in the US, the Brothers have nurtured a
deep commitment to belly dancers around the world who enjoy both their
recordings to use for their own performances, as well as the opportunities
to perform together live.

The 'Brothers' are wishing to tour Australia in 2007 and have left bookings in my hands
Details on the band can be found here http://www.brothersofthebaladi.com/ There are 3 full songs you can download and listen to, as well as full band bios.

We welcome expressions of interest in having the Brothers perform at various events as well as conduct Music workshops.

They will require a bellydancer in their show at each festival/event :-)

For further details you can contact me by return email or phone 0741210693.

WAMED photos/reviews?

Does anyone who attended any of the WAMED festival gigs have any photos they'd like to share? It's been less than a month and I'm already starting to forget who was who and who did what. Silly me left my camera at home in Hedland, so the only shots I have is a couple of back-stagers that a friend took of us. There was just so much going on! I know there were plenty of flashes going off at the performances, so there MUST be photos out there somewhere... Keti's page doesn't have a festival gallery >>sob<< so please, you are my only hope!

Some of my favourite performances were Kismet Tribe's 'Hung up' and the drum solo by the Betty Page lookin' duo - they were so CUTE! And the crazy frog dance (hilarious!), the Moroccan tray dance, Rose's fiery solo, the very cute milaya dance, the sword dances, the stick dances, the gypsy tribal, Womanjah's amazing "spell" and oh, the list goes on and on!

It's always fab to see the creativity that pours forth at the festival. I come back home feeling so inspired and invigorated. Can't wait to see you all again next year!

I am helping Leonie Sukan out, who is organising the dance workshops in Sydney, by posting info anywhere and everywhere as it will be a one day event only.

Information and all details about the workshops and the booking form to print out is on my website at

www.flamingsands.com

Up the top of the Index2 page :-) (Index 1 is our intro page and is not flash or video produced so doesn't take 20 years to load :-) ) so click on enter on the first page to get to index2.

The booking form is downloadable, opens in Word format so you can print it out to send to Leonie's address, which is supplied.

Doing it Tribal Style

Hi all,

I've notices a few of you gals are quite tribal-inspired, which is style still quite unknown in Australia (especially in Melbourne, where I am), I was just wondering:

A) Where do you get all your gorgeous tribal gear from?

and

B) How do you teach yourselves the dance - do you just follow the FCBD instructional videos or do you use other instructional material? And how much do you vary these by adding your own moves?

Would just like to hear some tribal experiences in a land where tribes are few and far between.

Thanx!

Hello,

I’m letting all of the tribes know about a regional event coming up soon – Rebirth. Burning Man, but rather than radical desert survival – radical tropical rain forest survival. Details of the event can be found here:

Hawaii… Fire spinning capital of the world… Big Island… Hot tub ponds heated by thermal vents… Black Sand Beaches… LAVA… REAL LAVA! And a Burning Man regional event.

I’ve tried to figure out how to reduce costs as much as possible for everyone coming over from the mainland (if you can think of anyother suggestions please post):

Having brought Tribal Style Belly dance to the Pacific Northwest in 1991, Paulette opened Caravan Studio - a World of Dance, in 2000. She is the artistic director of the Gypsy Caravan Dance Company - Portland's internationally acclaimed contemporary Tribal Belly dance troupe. Paulette Rees Denis found her soul dance in the Tribal Style of Belly dance. She teaches weekly classes in Portland as well as international workshops. Her Tribal styling is a fusion of several influences - urban, folk, ritual and trance dances from various countries as well as modern life. With a classical dance background, she started her Belly dance career as one of the founders of FatChanceBellyDance in San Fransisco. Since then, Paulette has created a rich blend of contemporary dance which is aesthetically pleasing, spiritually grounding and physically rewarding.

Underbelly is also excited to announce Paulette is also running Australia's first Basic Tribal Style Teacher Training Course:

Henna in Oz?

Hi everyone,

Not really belly dance related but maybe someone can help me out.

I'm in Australia and I'm trying to find some pure, natural henna powder. I want both 'red henna' (Lawsonia inermis) and 'black henna' (Indigofera tinctoria). Having a bugger of a time trying to track it down here. A few sites list 'henna dyes' but they're clearly mixed with other substances.

Any ideas?

This topic has come up on the Tribal Belly Dance Australia and Belly Dance Australia tribes, so I thought, hey, lets make it an even (or odd) three!
Re: Licences
Hi Amulya

You need your copyright licenses (see discussion on copyright that we have had previously) - they include AMCOS and APRA. You also need insurance (professional liability) both have been the subject of discussion on the ATS Oz forum.

Regards

Alaine
==end quote==

The Australian Bellydance Association has deals available to members for APRA and insurance policies.

www.abanetwork.org/ - go to Membership Deals on the side.

Hi all,

I got tired of having that cheesy "grey silhouette with a big ? on it" for our tribes main photo. So... I put one of mine in temporarily.

So peoples, feel free to add a few photos of yourself or your bellydancing group. Then I'll rotate the photos so that the main photo will change regularly to feature everyone!!!

Looking forward to seeing all your piccies!!

Hi everyone!

This is the only non-US belly dance tribe I found... so what is happneing in Australia? What are your primary influences there? Do most dancers learn from Egyptian instructors/videos? Just curious!

NEW Australian Bellydance website

Hello all,

You might have already seen this on one of the Aussie bellydance mailing lists, but I have been busy lately creating a new website!! It's called "Australian Bellydance".

It's a directory of all things to do with bellydance in Australia. It's not just a list of links to other websites tho. It includes lots of places and people that don't have websites at all!

I've divided it up into categories, and there's also an Event Calendar where people can list all sorts of BD related stuff.

The URL is http://www.annabella.net/bellydance/

If you click on the "About this site" link, it will tell you more about this project.

I have put some listings in already so that you can see what it's all about, but I think it's best if people add their own info so that their listing will say exactly what they want it to!

I'd love it if you would consider adding any new info, and any "happenings" for the events calendar!

There's simple "fill in" forms on the website, so if there's anyone or anything else you can think of... feel free!

Thanks a million!!

Happy dancing,
Annabella

Hello all,

I have just created this tribe so that Aussie bellydancers can chat and get to know each other and talk about any Aussie happenings.

Hopefully this tribe will soon grow to more than just me!!!!
