Australia has lots of lovely bellydancers, but who's who, and who's where? Tell us a bit about yourself, your style, who you admire, and all that good stuff.
I'm Mahastee, I live in Port Hedland, in the Pilbara region of WA. Trained by Min Adlide, who was trained by Terezka. Our troupe, MihriMah Raqs Sharqi is pretty isolated up here, but we travel to Perth for the annual wamed fest, and every year one or two of us wind up going to Perth and the East coast - usually Melbourne - for holidays, and checking out what's going on belly-wise on in 'the real world'. We mainly do oriental, but like to spice things up with modern music. We're also learning a bit of ATS, but are nowhere near ready to perform it yet..
My most-adored Aussie dancers are; Alma, Rose, Kismet Tribe, Helen the Henna Goddess, Jilyan, and oh, lots of others, I could go on and on.
So, how about everyone else?

Re: Come on Aussie, Introduce yourselves!
Sun, July 30, 2006 - 3:54 AMI’m not a belly dancer but I do dance in my home town in Australia. I am mainly interested in modern technique and combine that with the lyrical qualities I find in my research of Celtic forms of dance. I am an active member of the International Dance Council - CID and each year I write about my work in the field of dance for the World Congress on Dance Research. This year I am continuing on from what I wrote about last year; sensuality in dance.
My Tribe.net profile page shows more information and you can read about the International Dance Council – CID at: www.cid-unesco.org.

Re: Come on Aussie, Introduce yourselves!
Tue, September 19, 2006 - 3:29 AMHi Everyone,
I'm Stephanie and I've been training under Una here in California for about 2.5 years. I've been performing with Troupe Nijmeh for about a year as well.
I'll be moving to Sydney (Cremorne) at the end of October and I'll be looking for a new instructor/troupe.
Any suggestions??
Thanks ladies for your support! -

Sat, September 23, 2006 - 2:42 AMHi Mahastee,
I've met Min a few times at the WAMED - she is great. I used to be in Kalgoorlie - ran Jewels of the Desert while I was there, now I am residing in Melville (Perth).
Still dancing when I can, and filling in when I can when other teachers at Sheik to Sheik need someone.
cheers
Shafira

Sat, September 23, 2006 - 7:55 AMHi everyone!
Tracey, I'm not sure if we've met, but we've quite probably rubbed shoulders at some of the same events, WA bellydance is a very nice small world.
Shafira, I will never forget your 'ketchup' dance at WAMED, so fun and so brave!! I think I took your zills workshop that same year... And yes, Min is great, *sigh* she's my absolute hero - the woman who gave me the gift of bellydancing! -

Sat, September 30, 2006 - 7:22 PMAh the Ketchup Dance!!
Sometimes I like to do something with a bit of fun in it. when I taught it in Kalgoorlie I had the girls in fits of laughter!! and the Audience at our Haffla. sometimes we tend to take ourselves too seriously and need a bit of fun.
but then that's my motto "Belly Dance for the Fun of it!!"

Mon, October 23, 2006 - 7:24 AMHi, I'm Liz and I like to lurk!
I'm in Perth, WA. I danced with Helen in Narrogin for a while, then briefly took classes with Belyssa, and am now cramming in as many classes I can with Angie at Mystique.
I'm a bit (er.. a lot) of a costume junkie. I love making and buying costumes and other accoutrements.
I'll just go hide in this corner and lurk a bit more now! :)

Re: Come on Aussie, Introduce yourselves!
Tue, October 24, 2006 - 4:36 AMHi All,
I live in Melbourne love belly dancing, have only been dancing for a little over 18mths but I am totally addicted. If I have to miss a class for some reason which is not very often ( only 2 in the time I have been dancing) I feel miserable and can't wait for the next class.
I also want to learn tribal but those classes are a long way from where I live, so will just go the DVD route until I find a class. -

Sun, March 11, 2007 - 11:29 PMhi Mahastee, i'm wolf i've kicked around bellydancing for a few years in different states and styles , i guess i really am a bit of a gypsy.
I am currently in wollongong (nsw) back to basics after a few years off and studying ats with Jacqueline
www.tribaljewels.com.au/
whose site i made for them.
My personal style is being changed by ats but I love pure egyption raks sharqi , sharbi, hilal art , ATS (go fat chance) and fusion.
strange mix - I know.............
i've been blessed by many teachers and workshops with some amazing dancers , and yet theres still more to learn. these days I dance for a hobby .pleasure and to get away from my computer !!!!.

Re: Come on Aussie, Introduce yourselves!
Tue, January 1, 2008 - 1:09 PMI'm Zahira. I teach and perform in Northern Tasmania :-)
Last November I and another dancer ran Tasmania's first ever Middle Eastern Dance Festival (we both got sick of having to travel to the mainland for them for the past 14+ years :-) We're currently putting together another one for this year.
I'll still keep going to mainland festivals though, especially WAMED Fest - it's so much fun and the Western Australian dancers are very friendly. -

Re: Come on Aussie, Introduce yourselves!
Tue, January 1, 2008 - 2:41 PMBelly dance is alive and thriving in Newcastle. There is a hugh variety in styles being taught in the area. However, I must say I am truely addicted to American Tribal Style. Mostly because of the costuming, music. I am teaching (and learning) ATS FCBD format. As far as I know, my classes are the only ones available in the Newcastle (NSW) area dedicated to ATS.
I am a late comer to the belly dance scene, so I have grabbed the opportunity to teach ATS in my hometown before my feet (high heels worn years ago!!) and my back just get too painful.
My ambition is to have a strong competent ATS troupe developed by the time I want to take it easy and just dance for fun and make costumes!!

Re: Come on Aussie, Introduce yourselves!
Tue, January 1, 2008 - 8:48 PMI just noticed I missed this thread *smile*
I grew up in the Illawarra, mostly Dapto, then moved here to Perth 7 years ago. I took 'Egyptian' BD lessons for almost 18 months, but stopped due to some personal issues. And now, due to a change in family circumstances, I'm going to be moving back to the Illawarra in March/April this year...so I've been checking out some of the schools there to find a place when I go 'home'.
I also run my own little BD business, selling kuchi, and lots of other bits n bobs :-) I always wanted to run my own business, so I decided to mix my two favourite things!
I can't wait to be able to vend up and down the coast - I am excited to meet all you amazing dancers!
