Doing it Tribal Style

Hi all,

I've notices a few of you gals are quite tribal-inspired, which is style still quite unknown in Australia (especially in Melbourne, where I am), I was just wondering:

A) Where do you get all your gorgeous tribal gear from?

and

B) How do you teach yourselves the dance - do you just follow the FCBD instructional videos or do you use other instructional material? And how much do you vary these by adding your own moves?

Would just like to hear some tribal experiences in a land where tribes are few and far between.

Thanx!

    Hi Sarah

I don't visit tribe.net often so apologies for a late reply. I'm in Sydney and fortunately have access to a trained ATS teacher Devi Mamak, doing fatchance style. We also got a set of videos initially and started a practise group that has now, 2 years later grown into a 7 member performance troupe. We do the FCBD format of ATS.

We get our gear from locals - Nabi who is in the city here in Sydny imports afghani jewellery and sells it almost wholesale to us. There are also some true Indian shops locally too who stock fabric, bindi's etc. We also make our own stuff, the harder things are made by Lenore from Ghawazi Caravan.

and recently I found these guys:
    Varun Solanki [gauriartncraft@india.com]

who are in India. It's good quality, originals and they are lovely to buy from.

    Hope this helps!

      Ah, fantastic info, thanks Hilary.

I'm collecting the FCBD dvds as well to teach myself at home, doing the odd workshop. I don't yet have a tribe but am doing a tribal fusion class and incorporating elements into the occasional solo performance and duet.

It's all choreographed so far, but would love to move towards improvisation.

Devi is doing a workshop down here in January, so I can't wait for that.

Thanks again, Hilary, it was nice to hear from you.

No probs. You certainly look like you're not lacking in tribal costuming bits. Hopefully we'll meet up one day.

Devi is an extraordinary dancer. Maybe find out if there will be a tape of her workshop.

    Hi Sarah!
Sorry it has taken me awhile to reply...been very busy with end of year activities etc...
I am best described at present as a fusion bellydancer (bellydancing for 13+ years) and teach and perform currently in a Egyptian/Turkish Fol/Cabaret fusion group.....But I am ramping up my committment to ATS and am hoping to start a tribe here in Canberra in the new year.
I have been attending Tribal workshops in Sydney and Blue Mtns and self teaching using the FCBD DVDs & Kajira's videos over the past three years.
I have been seeking a Tribe for awhile and decided that I simply had to create one of my own as the closest Tribe is in the Blue Mtns and a four hour trip each way on a weekly basis just isn't pheasible....altho I hope to have monthly privates with Devi next year.
And as for the Tribal bits n bobs....just let me say EBAY!!!! All the way. I am an Ebay addict and buy alot of my stuff there.....
Also keep my eye out and often pick up bits in the most unlikely of places.
Op-shops sometimes have the most unusual items & any exotic gift store is always worth a browse (altho often too pricey).
If you want some Ebay store links let me know & I'll post them for your viewing pleasure.
Look forward to seeing you around the tribal scene sometime & love your Tribal look....very Rachael Brice-esque! :o)

    Hi Sarah

WHAT???? tribal style new in Victoria!!!! I don't think so! Sarah you don't need to go far to find out about tribal in Victoria... and you may be interested to note that Victoria was the state that brought ATS to Australia.

Tribal Style as in ATS emerged from Melbourne in the 1990's. Yes, Melbourne was the first to get ATS!! Maria and Tuelah of Desert Flowers were in the USA for Rakkasah, saw Fat Chance live and made a detour to San Francisco to take a couple of lessons and buy up the instructional videos. They brought it back to Victoria and premiered the first tribal style performance outside of Victoria at the Sydney MED Fest many years ago. They were responsble for inspiring many.

Victoria now had Christine and Pats (Nomadic Passions) in Ararat, Mel from Underbelly in Melbourne and Barbara (who I think brought Karen Gehrmann from FCBD out to Melbourne to teach ) in Melbourne. These great women are right in your own back yard and are the perfect people to contact with your questions.

Pats also has a great tribal wear and resource on-line boutique!

    Pats nomadicpassions@iprimus.com.au or 5352 5678
Mel Underbelly varcolaci13_@hotmail.com or phone: Phone Underbelly on : 9419-6620

Hope this helps you on your tribal journey

      Hi Alaine,

      Thanks for your reply!

It was a little while ago now that I wrote this post, since then Mel's tribal classes at Underbelly have taken off (Mel is one of my teachers) and I have taken a workshop with Bianca Rich of Zaar bellydance in Warburton and have made the trip to San Fran myself for Rakkasah where I met Carolena Nericcio and Rachel Brice and saw some of the most amazing performances (and performed myself!). So, I really have learned a lot more about tribal since I first posted my question!

Unfortunately I havn't had the opportunity to see the Desert Flowers and Ararat is not really that close to Melbourne (when I said not much ATS in Melbourne, I was referring to the city rather than regional areas). Nomadic Passions, I believe, are more recent too and I didn't know they were in Victoria - that's fantastic!

Anyway, thanks so much for the info, I'm loving seeing the many aspects of tribal gain popularity in Australia (and discovering how much was here already!). I hope to see your tribes someday too.

      Happy dancing,
      Sarah

Yay it is nice to see lots of other Tribal style dancers from Melbourne!

Did you get a chance to go to Devi's workshops in Warburton a couple of weeks ago?

Sure did! They were awesome. I just did the Sunday ones (I particulary loved the fusion workshop) and I had a brilliant time on the Saturday night. Although much of my night was spent in the market area minding my stall of tribal goodies, I did manage to escape to see all the acts and have a dance to the Counterfiet Gypsies.

Might I have seen you there?

I went to the Saturday workshops, I had to work Saturday night so couldn't stay for the performance, which was a shame. I have been told that it was amazing!
